Providence, RI: April 17, 2006 -- Sexual Assault & Trauma Resource Center today announced that it changed its name to Day One to better reflect the wide range of services regarding sexual assault it now
offers Rhode Islanders.
"We are truly a full-service resource center dealing with sexual violence," said Peg Langhammer, executive
director of Day One. "As we have expanded our services, we realized that our name focused on the past. Rape, sexual assault and trauma are the reasons why our clients seek our help, but our name constantly
reminds them of this. We help our clients move forward. We want them to know that from the first day they come to us, their lives can get better. We changed our name and graphic identity to reflect the hope
and promise that we offer."
In September, Day One will move to new headquarters at 100 Medway Street in Providence with ample
space to accommodate the growing needs of the organization and its constituents. During the news conference, agency officials announced that it is engaged in a capital campaign to raise $2.3 million. U.S.
Senator Lincoln Chafee, U.S. Representatives Patrick Kennedy and Jim Langevin, R.I. Attorney General Patrick Lynch, and Mayor David Cicilline spoke at the event. The entire Congressional delegation, including
Senator Jack Reed, has already secured a $650,000 appropriation for the acquisition and improvement of offices to better meet the needs of clients.
Joe Walsh, Faye Sanders and Mark Ryan are the chairpersons of the campaign. The building will be configured and designed to Day One's specifications, under the guidance of Lamborghini-Feibelman, Limited of Providence.
"Many people are not aware that last year alone our agency helped more than 2,500 Rhode Islanders deal with sexual assault," said Langhammer. "Sadly, the number of clients needing our assistance has risen
every year of our existence. When we move into our new headquarters, we will be able to further expand our services."
April is national Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Young R.I. men are the target audience for this year's program, and Day One has sponsored two clean-lyrics, alternative rock concerts as a relatable
method of conveying anti-sexual assault messages to impressionable youth. On April 26, Vaz, MMM's Live Archive, The Butcherings, Sweetthieves, and Spheres will perform at AS220. Tickets are $8 and proceeds
will benefit Day One. On April 29, Zox will perform at Lupo's. One dollar from each ticket sold will be donated to Day One. Tickets are $12 and available through Ticketmaster.
Day One's mission is to reduce the prevalence of sexual abuse and violence, and to support and advocate for those affected by it. For more than 30 years, Day One has been on the forefront of efforts to end
sexual violence in R.I. Established in 1973 as the R.I. Rape Crisis Center, Day One is the only agency in R.I. organized specifically to deal with issues of sexual assault as a community concern.
